Design of mechanical springs Stress and deflections of helical springs-springs for fatigue loading – Natural frequency of helical springs – Energy storage capacity – Helical torsion springs – Design of leaf springs. design of power screws Design of screw – Square, ACME and buttress screws – Efficiency of the screw. Design of compound screw, Differential screw, Ball screw – Possible failures.
UNIT-III
Design of bearings Types of journal bearings – Lubrication – Bearing materials – Journal bearing design – Ball and roller bearings – Static loading of ball and roller bearings, Bearing life – Failure of bearings.
UNIT-IV
Design of spur and helical gears Spur gears – Helical gears – Bending strength – Design analysis of spur and helical gears – Estimation of centre distance, Module and face width. Check for dynamic and wear considerations.
UNIT-V
Design of ic engine parts Pistons – Design of piston. Cylinder, Connecting rod. Crank shafts – Centre and over hung cranks.
